The Department for International Development (DFID) announced today (21
November 2012) that it is providing £850,000 to support people in Cuba
devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

Through the British Red Cross, the vital aid will go to the Cuban Red
Cross whose 3,500 volunteers are providing food, shelter and support to
people in need.

Barry Armstrong, British Red Cross disaster response manager, said:
"This funding is vital to support tens of thousands of people in Cuba
who have been impacted by the devastating effects of Hurricane Sandy.

"Many families lost everything – their houses, their belongings, their
livelihoods."
Meeting urgent needs

The DFID funds will help meet urgent needs, making a significant
contribution towards the Red Cross' work in Cuba, which includes:

• providing shelter for 15,000 families
• giving 10,000 families access to safe water
• providing essential household items (cooking utensils, blankets,
clothing) for 10,000 families.

The British Red Cross has already sent 2,000 hygiene parcels and
essential household items to Cuba, as part of nearly £50,000 worth of
support.
