Air pollution in Cuba is on the rise, said researchers in the government
newspaper Granma.

Rosemary López Lee, of Cuba's Meteorology Institute and main author of
an air pollution study, said that several monitoring stations around the
island found an increase in levels of sulfates and nitrates, mainly
coming from sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide emissions between
November 2008 and April 2010.

The study was presented at the end of the Atmospheric Contamination
Workshop in Havana in early June. López Lee, said the increase was
largely due to an increase in the use of fossil fuels for industry.

One of the biggest indicators was acid rain in the eastern Cuban
provinces of Holguin, Santiago and Camaguey.

López Lee, said her unit at the Institute, the Center for Atmospheric
Pollution and Chemistry, is researching more to find the limits that
would be acceptable for human inhabitants.
