SAN JUAN. – The U.S. authorities in Monito Island, located between
Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic, rescued 12 Cubans taken there
illegally by Dominican smugglers, the United States Border Patrol
announced today.
It said a U.S. Department of the Interior park ranger notified Puerto
Rico federal agents in Aguadilla (northwest), after sighting the group
of Cubans on Tuesday.
In a statement the Border Patrol said the Cubans, 11 men and one woman,
were in good health, and requested asylum based on the legislation known
as "wet foot dry foot policy," via which Cubans who manage to step on
United States mainland are allowed to remain in that country and obtain
a residency after being there for one year.
